A dedication to those evenings... Unhurried... stress-free... Absolute bliss! Started with a pencil drawing of an outline of the image I chose from the Internet! Colours used mainly are yellow ochre and burnt siena for the samosas and tea cup, respectively. Cadmium orange, lemon yellow for the jalebis. Prussian blue mixed with scarlet will give a gray shade. That's used for the shadows of the plate and on the plate. Mix of the gray with other colours for the shadows and folds in samosa where light doesn't reach! Brushes used are size 8 and size 0 round brushes. It's supposedly a steel plate... They have lots of dark and light shades due to reflections and shadows of the items on the plate and the curves and bends... For the surrounding, it could be a table mat or a table top. I guess its a table ma...

A Request from my Dad!

Image
A lazy afternoon, as I was idling around, achan (Dad) walks to me with his phone... His whatsapp open! "Why don't you paint something like this... The waves and the shadows..."  And, here I am... "Ships are the nearest things to dreams that hands have ever made, for somewhere deep in their oaken hearts the soul of a song is laid."              —Robert N. Rose  The sky is lightest shade of blue blending into a very light yellow around sunrise, perhaps!!! The sky is light... The sea is full of reflections... Reflection of the boat, the pink shade... The image is a challenge for me because I have yet not mastered the lights and shadows and water is yet a mystery! But let's give it a try... Started off with pencil drawing of the outline keeping it as light as possible. One good thing with water colour painting is that the pencil lines can be erased off! Instead of normal pencil we can use watercolor pencil also (Thought of that later!...

Light & Shadows

Image
"Shadow is a colour as light is, but less brilliant; light and shadow are only the relation of two tones."                   – Paul Cezanne Where there is light, there's always shadow, multi tones. Without them any picture would seen life less. It's the shades and reflections that give form to any object and breath to a picture... Creates an illusion of three dimension. Theoretically, a shadow is light blocked by an object. The object can block all or part of the light and based on the closeness to the light source the shadows change size. Shadows can be formed by one light source or more light sources. The Sun, lamps, flashlights, and fires are all sources of light. Not to complicate and as a beginner, I am concentrating on single light source.  The Will Kemp Art School 's A Beginners Guide to Light & Shadow   gives a good idea on the theory of shadows.  Almost all objects in the nature can be reduced to b...

An evening... a lesson learnt!

Image
Today afternoon amma walks into my room and sees me getting ready for some painting. Hadn't yet finalized what I was going to make! Picking up my older works she says, "Paint something from imagination!" And here it is... Something I vaguely remembered seeing in TV somewhere. Tried some shadowing effect. Here I am assuming that light source is from right hence the shadows are falling to the left and more towards the corner.. Though now that I actually think about it, I think it should have been more to the back... ๐Ÿ™„ For the shadow I have used dark grey from my 24 shades camel cake set.  That gives rise to an important question: Is Grey the correct colour for shadows? What are shadows? [5] drawpaintsculpt website (https://www.drawpaintsculpt.com/the-colour-of-shadows/) s ays, "It is a common misconception that a shadow is the absence of light. If there were no light in the shadow, you would not be able to see anything at all, whereas you almost always can...

The essentials in Watercolor Painting

Image
Guess what I found in my classmates drawing book ๐Ÿ˜Š As the book says, always keep your colour wheel with you to ensure best results.๐Ÿ‘ Now that we have the color wheel, let's see what else we need before we get started or rather the resources! "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home."                        – Twyla Tharp Of course the first thing for watercolor painting would be the  watercolors itself! WATERCOLOR Watercolors are made from particles of pigment bound together by an adhesive agent such as gum arabic. Many brands are available in the market and almost all have both student's quality and artist's quality watercolors with the difference in the Pigment concentration. Student's quality are less expensive but not as finely ground as artist's quality. And artist's quality tend to be more intense and permanent than student's quality paints. Since I am just in the process of learning I didn'...

The world of colours!

Image
“Let me, O let me bathe my soul in colors; let me swallow the sunset and drink the rainbow.” ― Kahlil Gibran Colours... I simply love colours. I have always loved colours. The set of bangles that I have, the collection of earrings... and those nail colors... (oh i love nail art as well but covid19 has put a break on that... keep my nails short and no paint!) And even the vivado simulations and ILAs... Always full of colours! (Vivado is just a software tool I use in office, never mind!). Well, who doesn't love colors? The indefinite hues in an evening sky... So mesmerizing! My dream... To capture them in a canvas. Some day... One day. Now... today... I am just learning!  "If one could only catch that true color of nature – the very thought of it drives me mad.” – Andrew Wyeth Starting from where I had stopped... Paused should be the word! A long pause! Watercolor tubes half used... Poster colors dried up... Time to awaken them... Time to learn water colour painting .. colours.....

The Bag of Treasure!

Image
Into the world of arts, I should say, revisiting the world of arts! My father draws beautifully, writes wonderfully, his handwriting is amazing and I, his daughter, is absolutely grateful in getting a little bit of those genes in me. I have heard that talents skip a generation. So I guess, my kids would be so talented!!! Yeah, right! Another lockdown... A few hours at my disposal! Last lockdown I was busy making jewellery... Earrings, necklaces, bracelet. I have ran out of ideas and as I have so many by now I don't feel like making any as of now! This lockdown was spent mostly cleaning and setting up rooms, wardrobe!! So, one grand and unusual day, a few hours spent browsing and cleaning my room, I stumbled across an old bag bringing back memories of some good old days! When I had first come to Bangalore.. a few months into my new job, a friend of mine asked me if I could accompany her in joining a class on visual arts. I loved drawing (thanks to my father, of course) so I immediat...
