Light & Shadows

Image
"Shadow is a colour as light is, but less brilliant; light and shadow are only the relation of two tones."                   – Paul Cezanne Where there is light, there's always shadow, multi tones. Without them any picture would seen life less. It's the shades and reflections that give form to any object and breath to a picture... Creates an illusion of three dimension. Theoretically, a shadow is light blocked by an object. The object can block all or part of the light and based on the closeness to the light source the shadows change size. Shadows can be formed by one light source or more light sources. The Sun, lamps, flashlights, and fires are all sources of light. Not to complicate and as a beginner, I am concentrating on single light source.  The Will Kemp Art School 's A Beginners Guide to Light & Shadow   gives a good idea on the theory of shadows.  Almost all objects in the nature can be reduced to b...

An evening... a lesson learnt!

Image
Today afternoon amma walks into my room and sees me getting ready for some painting. Hadn't yet finalized what I was going to make! Picking up my older works she says, "Paint something from imagination!" And here it is... Something I vaguely remembered seeing in TV somewhere. Tried some shadowing effect. Here I am assuming that light source is from right hence the shadows are falling to the left and more towards the corner.. Though now that I actually think about it, I think it should have been more to the back... 🙄 For the shadow I have used dark grey from my 24 shades camel cake set.  That gives rise to an important question: Is Grey the correct colour for shadows? What are shadows? [5] drawpaintsculpt website (https://www.drawpaintsculpt.com/the-colour-of-shadows/) s ays, "It is a common misconception that a shadow is the absence of light. If there were no light in the shadow, you would not be able to see anything at all, whereas you almost always can...

Practice Practice and more Practice...

“Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.”                    – Pablo Picasso Spent the evening trying to familiarise with the shades that I have.  The excercise had started with putting the greens that was there in my colour kit on paper. Just to see what shades they actually gave.  The first column are the greens that I have (poster colour+pan). Second and third are different values of the respective hues made by adding water to the brush. For the first have used a relatively less wet brush to get the full value of the shade.  For the second dip the same brush in water once or twice and tap on the edge of tge glass to remove excess water.  For the third repeat what was done for the second column again, resulting in a much lighter value of the hue.  Fourth row was created by mixing yellow to the respective green. Here, in the same circle have tried to bring in different values. An...

Online is such wide and huge world in itself... The World Wide Web! During my childhood I had to turn the whole library upside down for even a single topic! But now, everything is just one click away. Technology!  Social networking has totally revolutionised the lives of many. From entertainment to education, everything one can find.  During my college days, I remember there was Orkut .  Used to be glued to that... The scrapbook... Hmm.. those were some days... Had so much time in my hands! Then, it disappeared... 'On June 30, 2014, Google announced that Orkut would be shutting down completely on September 30, 2014.' And then, it was an era of Facebook ... Add your friends... Chat with them... Share your pictures... Posts ... Pages... Opinions are shared... I think it's evolving still!  Pictures used to be in our albums first. Then when digital camera, smartphones came, it used to be in our memory cards... Gallery... We would share in Facebook...

My workspace

"Art is the only way to run away without leaving home."                  – Twyla Tharp A glimpse of my meagre workspace. Making the most of my small room 😊 and small table! The Work Table I started off this journey, the present one, from 14th of April and today is 30th of May. More than a month! I started with my older stuffs but have added on a few items newly.  The Colors I already had camlin 12 shades watercolor tubes and 6 shades camel poster colors and another 12 shades faber castle poster colors.  Some of them dried and some still active. In the poster colour, I just added some water and they were good to go. I also had 24 shades Camlin King watercolor pencils.  Recently bought Camel watercolor cakes 24 shades. I didn't want to spend much and I wanted a 24 shades set. So went for this. Got it under 200 along with oil pastels, 12 shades color pencils, crayons and glitter... ...

The essentials in Watercolor Painting

Image
Guess what I found in my classmates drawing book 😊 As the book says, always keep your colour wheel with you to ensure best results.👍 Now that we have the color wheel, let's see what else we need before we get started or rather the resources! "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home."                        – Twyla Tharp Of course the first thing for watercolor painting would be the  watercolors itself! WATERCOLOR Watercolors are made from particles of pigment bound together by an adhesive agent such as gum arabic. Many brands are available in the market and almost all have both student's quality and artist's quality watercolors with the difference in the Pigment concentration. Student's quality are less expensive but not as finely ground as artist's quality. And artist's quality tend to be more intense and permanent than student's quality paints. Since I am just in the process of learning I didn'...

My Colour Wheel!

Image
Start of the Journey into the world of water colors First step should always be gaining knowledge on colours. A colour wheel helps us in knowing 1. Combining which colours will give our desired shade 2. Which colours will go with which colours. 3. Which colours to avoid. 4. How to place the colours in our design 5. The relationships, the harmony between the colours etc... "It's a fabulous thing to give life to fabric, to make something move well, the harmony of colour."              -- Hubert de Givenchy I have done many paintings without knowing anything about color theory and have found myself many a times scratching out my painting because it felt too sore for the eyes or too much plain... And many a times making a parody of the image that I was trying to replicate! Mostly because different types of watercolours we use the shades they provide are different. If we go for those boxes with paint cakes... They give an absolute different shade from those...
